Judge Sonya Sotomayor

The batter is on the deck, let’s hope she connects.

President Obama announced yesterday morning his choice for justice on the Supreme Court: Judge Sonya Sotomayor. She has the educational background a Princeton graduate and a jurist doctorate from Yale along with summa cum laude title. She also has plenty of experience: a prosecutor from the NY D.A office, a corporate litigator, and being a judge on two levels. To top it off she was initially nominated by former President George H.W Bush then elevated by Bill Clinton. And to make the package complete she is of Latin background and a woman to boot.

So, what could be wrong? According to the Republican she’s a Liberal that tries to push her agenda through the court system. If it wasn’t so serious it would be laughable, the conservative pundits as usual grabs on to sound bites and two opinions to make their case. A career in the justice systems comprises of more then just sound bites, if the conservatives actually read the cases she gave opinions on, they would see that she applies the law to engender a fair outcome. (By the way I read most if not all her opinions, every now again there is a in the weeds moment, but name a judge that doesn’t wallow once in while.)

The justice committee will try to get out of her where she stands on reproductive rights and the use of the death penalty. However the Republicans (who answer to voters) won’t push to far, and the Democrats will push enough to make sure they are not perceived as a rubber stamp. All in all a bipartisan choice, just enough to light a fire under the respective parties, but not too much to burn them.

No, if only I could get Judge Sotomayor to stop saying Latina woman, we’d be set.
