Sen Ben Nelson vs Reproductive Right

“Nelson’s provisions: (1) ensure that no public funds will be used for abortion; (2) mandate that every state provide an insurance plan option that does not cover abortion; and (3) gives each state the right to pass a law barring insurance coverage for abortion within state borders”

The above is quoted from Senator Ben Nelson (D-Ne) press release today on the changes to the Health Care Reform Bill currently being read on the Senate floor.

In three lines the Senate Democrats have turned back the clock on Roe v Wade. The average American women have health insurance to cover their reproductive needs. By giving states the right to pass laws making it illegal for all insurances (public or private) from covering this medical procedure; it creates unleveled playing field. The well to do and connected will once again be the only class that will have access to this medical procedure, while the middle class and the rest will have to pay out pocket for an abortion. This procedure depending on the medical issues can cost upward to $1000, 00. It also should be noted not all abortion are about ending an unwanted pregnancy; some are because the fetus has an anomaly that is not compatible to life. I understand the urgent need that the Senate has in passing a Health Care Reform Bill before the Winter Break, but it should not be at the expense of women reproductive rights.
